8 Things You May Not Know You Can Do With Your PS5

Sony’s PlayStation 5 has been out for a while, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve delved into everything it offers. This console has an extensive list of features and things you can do to entertain yourself and get the most out of your purchase.

That said, it can be daunting and time-consuming to discover all these lesser-known things for yourself. But do not worry; we’ve put together a list of things you might not know you can do with your PS5. Let’s get under the hood of the PS5 and explore some of its coolest offerings.

1. Use your old DualShock 4 to play PS4 games

Old habits are hard to unlearn. If you’ve been gaming on a PS4 for a long time and recently switched to the PS5, you may still prefer the feel and grip of the DualShock 4. If so, you’ll be happy to know that you PS4 controller on your PS5.

It’s worth noting that you won’t be able to play PS5 games as they aren’t compatible with the DualShock 4. You’ll still enjoy an extensive list of backward-compatible PS4 games, though. So, if you’re feeling a little nostalgic or more comfortable with your old controller, connect it to your PS5 console with a USB cable to link the two devices.

2. Chat with friends without headset

One of the features we love about the PS5’s DualSense controller is the built-in microphone that supports voice chats. So you don’t need to use a headset to chat with your friends while playing online games. You can easily send voice memos to your friends on PS5 or join a chat without wearing a headset, which is ideal if you don’t have one.

However, just because you can use your controller’s built-in microphone to chat with friends doesn’t necessarily mean you should. There are some compelling reasons why you should avoid the microphone on your PS5 controller and use a headset instead. First, the sound quality will be worse with the built-in microphone, and second, your controller’s battery will run out faster.

Finally, because the microphone is on by default, you sometimes forget to mute it yourself and broadcast your conversations to your fellow gamers every time you play online, which can be quite embarrassing.

So to avoid possible accidents, we recommend that you mute your controller by default by going to Settings > Sound > Microphone > Microphone status at login and select Stupid to turn it off.

3. Customize your DualSense controller’s Create button

One change you may have noticed on your DualSense controller is the new Create button, which has replaced the Share button on the DualShock 4. There’s no need to panic, though, as it largely retains the same functionality as the old Share button and things get better. So, what is the PS5 Create button?

The Create button is located at the top left of your controller’s touchpad and mainly allows you to capture and share your best gaming moments through screenshots and video clips. But did you know you can also customize your controller’s Create button?

By default, you can take a screenshot by long-pressing or tapping the Create button and the . to select Take screenshot choice.

On the other hand, tapping the Create button twice will save and save a video clip of your recent gameplay. However, if you prefer, you can change these default settings by going to Settings > Recording & Broadcasting > Recordings > Create Button Shortcuts and select the desired options.

4. Change your PS5 covers

Since its launch, the PS5’s design has attracted a lot of attention and mixed reviews. Some people like the console’s oversized, futuristic look, while others find it a bit too flashy and prefer the PS4’s more understated design. But one thing is certain: the PlayStation 5 is certainly an eye-catcher.

While there’s not much you can do about the size, one thing you may not know is that you can rid yourself of the solid white color by replacing your PS5 covers. And no, you don’t need any special tools for this, because the covers are easy to change.

In addition, you will be happy to know that Sony has made some covers to give your console a fresh look; you can view them via the PlayStation website.

5. Clean your PS5

Dust build-up is inevitable, especially if you keep your PS5 in an open space. Over time, dust will build up on your console’s vents, which can affect its performance. In extreme cases, dust build-up can cause overheating and damage your PS5. The good news is that, unlike its predecessor, the PS5 is much easier to clean as you can easily remove the cover.

Before you clean your console, it goes without saying that you always unplug it. After removing the covers, use a handheld vacuum with a narrow attachment to gently suck the dust out of the vents. Doing this regularly will keep your PS5 in top condition and avoid potential problems down the road.

6. Stream PS5 games to your mobile devices

The PS5 comes with a feature called Remote Play that allows you to stream games from your console to your mobile devices or computer. So if you have one TV in your house and someone else is watching it, you can still play your PS5 games on your mobile phone or tablet. Once you start adding games to your internal storage, you’ll quickly notice that the 667GB of available space won’t last long. That’s because PS5 games are huge; some can take up more than 100GB of space. While you might consider transferring your PS4 and PS5 games to an external hard drive to free up some space, you won’t be able to play the latter from there; you will need to copy them back to internal storage.

A much better long-term solution is to add an SSD to your PS5. This gives you much-needed extra storage space, and it also makes your games load faster. Plus, it future-proofs your console as PS5 games just keep getting bigger.
