Done with Stranger Things 4? 9 TV shows to watch next on Netflix

Stranger Things is loved for several reasons: the direct casting, the 80s nostalgia and the very captivating plot. In fact, the only real downside to Stranger Things seems to be that no one can stop themselves from binge-watching every 22 hours.

So, what should you do if you’re all caught up and the next season of Stranger Things isn’t coming out anytime soon? Watch a similar show! While the TV shows listed aren’t a perfect emulation of Stranger Things’ tone, atmosphere, or writing, in some ways they share similar qualities.

Warning: This post contains mild spoilers about Stranger Things and the other shows mentioned.

Black Mirror isn’t so much a series as it is a collection of independent short films, each set in the not-so-distant future. Each episode presents some type of technology or scenario and then tells the story of people living in a world with it. While there are plenty of good shows on Netflix, Black Mirror is one of the best.

For example, one particularly gripping episode features characters who all use a tiny implant called a Grain, which captures every moment of their lives and can be played back in real time. The personal conflicts and lifestyle choices that result from its use raise some well-timed questions about where we each draw the line between the types of technologies we accept and reject.

What it’s like when stranger things

If you’re a general fan of shows set in different time periods, you might like that Black Mirror is set in a slightly futuristic world. This is somewhat similar to the way Stranger Things played out in the somewhat outdated time period of the 80s: both shows are set in times opposite to each other but are close enough to our current time that we can empathize with the characters and strange situations they face.

As a warning, the first episode of Black Mirror is the least distinctive of the show. You don’t have to watch the episodes chronologically at all. Many people watch the episodes out of sync and get to the first episode at a different time. Otherwise, you might get the wrong impression about the content that will be featured in the rest of the show.

Hemlock Grove tells the story of a small Pennsylvania town where a series of brutal murders take place. Focusing on the Godfrey family’s point of view, you’ll be kept in suspense throughout the series as more of the truth behind the family and their connection to the city is explored.

What it’s like when stranger things

Both Stranger Things and Hemlock Grove offer you a horror/thriller solution, both focusing on fictional, “sleepy” cities infested with the dead, revealing secrets about the characters and their relationship to the city.

You’ll notice that Hemlock Grove’s story is darker than Stranger Things, despite their obvious similarities. Both shows eventually spin in different directions, but this initial resemblance between them will make the first jump easier.

An adopted family of superheroes is reunited after the death of their adopted father, with whom they all had a difficult relationship. As they come to terms with their father’s death, the characters also discover that the world is facing an approaching apocalypse. Thus, a battle ensues on two fronts as the family members resolve their differences (mostly) and work together to save the world as they did during their early years.

What it’s like when stranger things

The Umbrella Academy is similar to Stranger Things in that both shows focus on a group of misfits who work together to save the world, but don’t necessarily get along.

You may notice that the shows differ in tone as they find their grooves in their respective second seasons, but there are certainly comparisons to be made between the two.

Storyline

Shadowhunters focuses on a group of half-angels who, living on Earth, protect the world from demons trying to cross over. The series centers on Clary Fray, who discovers at eighteen that she belongs to this group of demon hunters, sending her into a world she was hopelessly unprepared for.

What it’s like when stranger things

Shadowhunters is similar to Stranger Things in how they both interact with beings from the outside and the unknown. Both shows bring fantastic ideals, such as angels, demons and parallel dimensions, into a modern, contemporary period without being utterly ridiculous.

The plots of these shows may be different, but they cover much of the same territory in abstract ways.

A Series of Unfortunate Events tells the story of Count Olaf, who seeks to steal the legacy of his distant relatives after their parents die in a fire. The series explores many themes, such as family dynamics, betrayal, heroism and morality, with a science fiction background that will keep you hooked on the mysterious aspects of the story.

What it’s like when stranger things

A Series of Unfortunate Events and Stranger Things both play with the science fiction genre without fully embracing the genre as the dominant feel of the show. Both shows also feature a cast of pre-teens who grow into teens, creating similar coming-of-age themes shared by both stories.

A Series of Unfortunate Events is certainly tamer than Stranger Things, but that’s not always a bad thing if you’re looking for something a little more lighthearted.

The OA is a show about a blind woman named Prairie, who returns to the world after disappearing with her sight restored, scars on her back and identifying herself as the original angel. As time passes, her powers and motives for returning are revealed to a group of local people who draw her into her supernatural crusade.

What it’s like when stranger things

The OA embraces the supernatural and fantasy tones that Stranger Things is known for. While these shows are vastly different in terms of cast, story, and tone, you can draw similarities in how they both flirt with these different, out-of-the-ordinary genres.

This miniseries offers a comprehensive look at the scientist Frank Olson who worked for the CIA and died after meeting agents involved in the MKUltra program. The docudrama alternates between the events leading up to Olson’s death and the present with his son discussing his beliefs about his father’s death.

The death of Frank Olson is shrouded in many theories and could send you down an interesting, yet terrifying rabbit hole.

What it’s like when stranger things

Both Stranger Things and Wormwood deal with the CIA’s infamous MKUltra program in the late 20th century. The program is at the forefront of Wormwood’s focus, but if you got interested in it after seeing its importance to Eleven’s character in Stranger Things, then you’ll love delving deeper into what happened.

The Locke family moves to a new home in a new area and finds numerous strange keys that open secret, magical doors that perform various functions. Soon after discovering the keys and the doors, the characters realize that they must find the keys before a group of demons does, who want to use the doors to merge different worlds and increase their power over the world.

What it’s like when stranger things

Both Stranger Things and Locke & Key deal with kids dealing with demons, parallel worlds, and sci-fi, as well as fantasy elements. Plus, both shows capitalize on the horror drama, leaving you with a shudder while interspersing that with charming moments of comedy between the characters.

Two children go missing in a German village, sparking an investigation and a curious mystery spanning three seasons and multiple time periods. It’s one of the best Netflix shows to binge watch if you’re looking for some distraction.

An intricate mystery drama involving time travel makes Dark one of the most must-see TV shows out there. Filled with an ensemble cast of compelling characters, you’ll enjoy the twists and turns in the story as you learn more about what connects the inhabitants to the village.

What it’s like when stranger things

Both shows have stories embroiled in mystery; both shows have a cast of young teens who carry a lot more responsibility than they should be handling.

You could argue that Dark is darker than Stranger Things, despite its upbeat feel in terms of cinematography. You will find much less comedic moments in Dark and a much rougher feel. Who knows, you might even find yourself preferring Dark over Stranger Things at the end.

Maybe you want something different in tone? In this case, you can watch plenty of other great shows to get out of your comfort zone. There is no shortage of good TV and there are plenty of streaming services with extensive libraries.
