Fantasy Football Week 3 RB Preview: James Conner a low-end start if he goes, Darrel Williams a flex if not

NFL: December 19 Cardinals at Lions

The Arizona Cardinals lost James Conner to an ankle injury in Week 2, and while they don’t think it’s serious, we don’t currently expect Conner to play, adding his replacement to the top exemption thread…if only one knew who exactly. used to be. Last week, both Darrel Williams and Eno Benjamin had eight carries, with Benjamin earning four goals and Williams three. We are leaning towards Williams because of the work on the goal line but we also don’t know how much of that will be in week 3 against a very good Rams defence.

If Conner is indeed out, as the projections below suggest, we rank Williams as a touchdown dependent flex and Benjamin as more of a desperation flex. But even if Conner can play in week 3, both are fine stashes. Conner is 27 years old and has missed at least two games every year of his career. His career high in carries is 217.

The other question is whether Conner himself is a must-start when active. If he’s doubtful all week, the answer is no. If he gets full training on Friday, it’s doubtful. This Arizona offense has produced outstanding running back production for the past three years, averaging more than one running back score per game. But Conner has picked up just 51 yards on 17 carries, despite not having a good defense yet. In week 3 they will for sure.

I’ll add Conner to the projections below when he’s free. While I can’t say exactly where it will rank, it will probably be lower than where you have it lined up. He’s a flex at best when he’s a real game time decision and a borderline No. 2 who backs out when he’s released on Friday or Saturday. In any case, have a backup plan.
