How to send a message on Facebook Messenger to all your friends

On Facebook, the process of sending sending a single message to multiple recipients is the same as sending a message to one person. While Facebook limits the number of recipients that can receive your message (250 members maximum), you can create multiple group messages to reach everyone on your friends list.

This feature is a great way to send important correspondence to everyone at once. You can even create a “secret group” that allows you to include as many people as you want. These groups have the same rules as a private Facebook message between friends:

Facebook groups are only available to desktop users, so keep that in mind when you try the steps below.

Send a message to multiple members at once on Facebook

The ability to send a single message to all your friends (or those who matter) is possible on both the Facebook Messenger app and the official Facebook website. The steps to get it done may vary slightly depending on the platform you choose to use.

How to send a group message with Messenger

  1. Start the Meta “Messenger” app from your mobile device (iOS or Android).
  2. Press “To chat” icon.
  3. Select the “Metafriends” you want to receive your message.

Things to keep in mind when creating your message:

With Facebook, you can only add 250 recipients to one message. If you have more than 150 friends, you need to create multiple posts to reach everyone.

If you need to create more than one post, you may want to compose your post in another app, such as the Comments: app or Google Keep app so you can easily paste it into multiple messages.

If you want to reach all your friends, you can type a single vowel in the field and select the friends that appear. You can do this for each subsequent vowel in the alphabet. Tap OK once you’ve selected all the friends you’ve chosen to message.

At this point, you can finally start typing your message. Tap the typing area at the bottom of the screen to open the keyboard and extract your message. Once the message is complete, tap the Send button.

Whenever you receive a response to the message sent, everyone within the group will see that response. To reach more than 250 people, you have to repeat the steps described above or you can go further down and follow the process of creating a Facebook group.

Using Facebook through a web browser

Create a Facebook group

While on Meta/Facebook on your desktop, you also have the option to create a Facebook group. This method is different from sending a simple group message where the limit is 250 recipients. Instead, this option allows you to reach more people by posting as you would on your Facebook wall instead of the limited options offered through Messenger, as long as those friends have group notifications enabled.

Anyone you invite to the Facebook group will be notified that they’ve been added. This also gives them the option to unsubscribe if they wish. You can also set it for those friends you add, also have the power to add friends to the group yourself.

To create a Facebook group, follow these steps:

  6. You may reach an invite limit during this process, but you can add anyone you initially missed after the Facebook group was created. Skip creating a post and post to the group instead.
  7. Then choose the “privacy level” from the Facebook group. By default, privacy is set to ‘Closed’. The group is public, but the members and what is said are only private to the group.
  8. If you are creating this group only to be able to talk to send messages to everyone in your friends list at once, just select “Secret” from the privacy menu. This removes it completely from the public eye.
  9. You can add a note that the recipients will see once the message is received by clicking the “Comments” icon. The icon appears as a small blue icon to the far right of the blank “Add some people”.
  10. Check the box next to “Pin to Shortcuts” to ensure your group is added to the “Shortcuts” menu in the left pane.

  12. If you were unable to add all your friends to the group during the creation process in “Step 5”, please return to the Facebook home page where Groups can be found in the menu on the left.
  13. Find your group name under the “Shortcuts” heading and click it to open it.
  14. Look for the “Invite members” box on the right side of the page. Add those members you couldn’t add before by typing in their names and selecting them.
  15. Once everyone has been added to the Facebook group you want, you can type your message in the “Write something” box at the top of the page.
  16. Finish this process by clicking the Post button. Each recipient with notifications turned on will receive one that something new has been posted to the group.
