Who’s playing

Miami (OH) @ Northwestern

Current records: Miami (OH) 1-2; Northwest 1-2

What to know

The Northwestern Wildcats have the luxury of staying home for another week and will welcome the Miami (OH) RedHawks at 7:30 p.m. ET Sept. 24 at Ryan Field. Both teams have lost in their last game, so they will have plenty of motivation to win the ‘W.’

It was all 14-14 at halftime, but the Wildcats didn’t quite match the Southern Illinois Salukis in the second half when they met last week. Northwestern fell short against SIU, falling 31-24. If the result caught your eye, it should be: Northwestern was by far the favorite. One thing that held Northwestern back was the mediocre play by QB Ryan Hilinski, who didn’t play his best game: Despite two touchdowns, he threw two interceptions and fumbled the ball once with just 4.95 yards per passing attempt.

Meanwhile, Miami (OH) scored first but ultimately less than the Cincinnati Bearcats in last week’s game. The RedHawks’ painful 38-17 defeat to Cincinnati may stick with them for a while. Miami (OH) was certainly aware of their 24-point deficit in the points spread, but foreknowledge did nothing to prevent the result. No one had a standout game offensively for Miami (OH), but they got scores from WR Mac Hippenhammer and TE Jack Coldiron.

The losses push both teams back to an identical 1-2. A few defensive numbers to keep in mind before kick-off: Northwestern enters the game after picking the ball four times, finishing 19th in the nation. Miami (OH) is completely their equal: they also come with four interceptions in the matchup.
