Resetting a Parental Controls PIN for Nintendo Switch

Sharing your Nintendo Switch console with your kids can be a great way to keep them entertained, and you can use parental controls to make sure they don’t access anything inappropriate.


Sometimes you can forget your parental control PIN. Fortunately, you can reset it by getting a Nintendo master key from its website.


Resetting a Parental Control PIN on your Nintendo Switch

Your Parental Controls PIN is a four to eight digit code that must be entered whenever adult content is accessed on your Switch. If you’ve forgotten it, you may be afraid you’ve been locked out forever. Fortunately, this is not the case. Your parental control PIN can be reset, but this requires a few steps.

To reset the Parental Control PIN on your Nintendo Switch, do the following:

  1. go to System settings.
  2. Scroll down to Parental supervision then go to Change settings.
  3. In the message about the parental control app, press X.
  4. Go to Change PIN code. You can also go to Change settings if you want to change any of the restrictions.
  5. Enter your desired new PIN code twice, then press A.

You should now have reset your parental control PIN. It should go without saying, but make sure your child is never watching you do this so it can’t be used as one of the ways your kids can get around the parental control software.

If they are particularly cunning, they can reset the PIN to what you originally set it like before going to bed to avoid suspicion!

Resetting a parental control PIN in the parental control app

Maybe your kids have figured out how to bypass the parental control PIN on their Switch by following the above method. In this case, linking your parental control PIN to the app is a great way to prevent them from undermining it, as they won’t be able to access your device.

With parental controls through the app, you can:

  1. Set a daily play time limit.
  2. Set a bedtime alarm.
  3. Check game time and games played.

As you can see, the app gives you a lot more options and control than just parental controls through the console. If you just want to use the service as an analytical tool, you can use it to track how much time you’ve spent on individual games, useful if you want to track and rate the video games you play with Backloggd.

You need to set up your Nintendo Switch using a smart device, such as your mobile phone. On your mobile phone you will want to download the Nintendo Switch parental control app (App Store/Google Play Store).

Then do the following on your Nintendo Switch:

  1. Go to System Settings > Parental Controls > Change Settings.
  2. Select Set up with smart device.
  3. When asked if you have installed the app, select Yes.
  4. Select Next one and then Enter the registration codeand then select Clutch.
  5. Select next Continue setting on smart device.

Now go to the device that has the Nintendo Switch parental control app and do the following:

  1. Go to the Settings tab.
  2. Tap on PIN.
  3. In the field that says Change PIN codeadd your desired new PIN.
  4. Tap Save.

You should now have changed your parental control PIN through the app.

By making sure that you are the only one with access to parental controls for your Nintendo Switch, you ensure that your children don’t play too much or play after bedtime.

Changing the PIN will ensure that it is set to something you can remember so that your child can still access the device if they are locked out at any time.
