Turn Disney+ subtitles on or off

To make your viewing experience easier, you can enable captions on Disney+ on any device. Here’s what you need to know.

Subtitles are great for all sorts of reasons. Whether you need them for accessibility purposes, are learning a new language, or want to follow every line of dialogue, you can use subtitles for almost any movie and TV show on Disney+.

In this article, we’ll show you how to enable and disable subtitles on Disney+ and how to customize their appearance.

Turn subtitles on or off on Disney+

Whether you’re watching Disney+ on your computer, TV, mobile, or other device, you can enable subtitles. This setting is applied per profile and is permanent on all your devices; enable subtitles on your phone and they will show on your TV too.

You don’t need to download the subtitles – they are an essential part of the Disney+ experience.

In most cases, subtitles are available in several languages. This depends on the movie/show and your country. If a desired language is not available, try changing the language of the Disney+ app first. If you still can’t find the language, it’s either not available in that country or it doesn’t exist at all.

To turn subtitles on or off:

  1. Start playing something and pause the video.
  2. Select the rectangle subtitles icon in the corner; it’s probably top right or bottom right. You can also press on Roku * on your remote; on Apple TV, swipe down on your remote.
  3. Depending on your device, you may need to select: Subtitles.
  4. Choose your subtitle language. Alternatively, to disable subtitles, select Out.
  5. Depending on your device, you may need to press . to press back or the cross icon to close the subtitle menu.

How to change the subtitle display on Disney+

You can also change the appearance of the subtitles. To do this from the internet, stay in the subtitles menu and select the gear icon. For smart TVs, switch to the Subtitle Styling tab.

If you don’t see an option to customize the appearance of subtitles, it means you need to manage this setting at the device level. This includes iOS, Android, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Xbox, and PlayStation. To do this, go to the Accessibility section in the device settings (not the Disney+ app.)

Never miss a moment from Disney+

Now you know how to enable subtitles on Disney+, how to customize their appearance, and how to remove them. Chances are you’ll want to keep them on, especially since the sound mixing on many modern movies is getting progressively worse.
