Using the power dashboard in the Amazon Alexa app

Smart home devices are ideal for fingertip control, voice control and remote management. But one benefit that is often overlooked is the ability to monitor the energy consumption of your smarthome devices. You can with the Amazon Alexa app.


What is the energy dashboard?

A smart home can be more than just the latest software update or the most convenient way to turn on your lights. For example, smart technology can help you feel less overwhelmed when it comes to tasks and chores. And there are apps like the Energy Dashboard that can help you be a good steward of the environment and reduce your carbon footprint.

The Energy Dashboard is part of: Amazon’s climate promise friendly program. With the Energy Dashboard you can monitor the energy consumption of smart devices such as refrigerators and lamps.

Using the Energy Dashboard

Access to the Energy Dashboard is easy. You don’t have to manually add each device, as the Alexa app will display it automatically when it reports energy information.

Open your Amazon Alexa app to: iOS or android. On the home screen:

  1. Tap Devices.
  2. Tap Energy dashboard in the top middle section (you may need to scroll a few items like guard and hunches to the left.)

You get to see a wealth of useful information, including an overview of all smart devices that can report their energy consumption. You will see the estimated total energy in kilowatt hours (kWh). You can:

  • Track trends such as increasing or decreasing carbon footprint.
  • View the time usage for your devices measured in hours.
  • View statistics by week or by month.
  • Customize your report to filter information for all devices, or lights, or plugs, etc.
  • Check out suggested routines, such as having Alexa turn off the porch light at dawn for your local area.
  • Dig deeper into specific device information, such as your backyard lighting.

Enter wattage information to improve accuracy

If you use a smart plug, you can enter specific information about the device connected to it. This way you can adjust your report and keep it as accurate as possible. For example, if you have a light bulb connected to your smart plug, you can enter the wattage of your light bulb.

  1. From the Energy dashboard, tap Plugs top right.
  2. Tap View plugs that need wattage info.
  3. Tap your device name under PLUGS.
  4. Tap the radio button next to . to tick light.
  5. Enter your device’s wattage and tap Save.

You can usually find the wattage amount on the bulb or packaging. You can add up the wattage if you have more than one device connected to your smart plug.

If you’re concerned about your carbon footprint, your smart home can be about more than just controlling your appliances. It’s smart to keep an eye on the wattage of each electrical appliance and adjust your usage as you see fit.
