Being a two-time Super Bowl champion and two-time Super Bowl MVP should make a person instantly recognizable. However, like Eli Manning discovered the hard way, that’s not always the case.

Manning was a guest on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, and he told a story about being confused with legendary Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps. Manning said he was going to checkout at a store and the cashier seemed excited to meet him.

As Manning quickly found out, the employee was not eager to meet the long time New York Giants quarterback. Instead, he thought Phelps had just come to the counter and Manning needed to clear the air.

To be fair to the cashier, Manning recently went undercover. In an episode of Eli’s Places, the Legend of the Giants disguised himself as quarterback Chad Powers to try for the Penn State football program as a walk-on.

Manning was asked about the stunt by Fallon and he said that Powers has a lot of talent. The only thing that keeps him from being a college superstar is his aptitude — or lack thereof.

“I threw it. Chad can throw it. He can really throw it,” Manning said. “He is a good player. He would have made it to the team, but he is not eligible.”
