What is the Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP)?

You may want a souvenir to commemorate an event, conference, seminar, or other gathering you attended that was particularly memorable. This could be a name badge from a conference you attended with other employees or a ticket from a movie you saw at the cinema.

Well, something new fills the gap: proof of attendance protocol.

Proof of attendance protocol is a non-fungible token (NFT) that proves that you attended a personal or virtual event. These digital stickers or badges will be sent to your wallet as a reward for attending these events.

How do POAPs work?

Event planners and attendees can use the POAP website to organize or participate in events. Although organizing events is free, planners can charge an entrance fee if desired. You use your location details or scan a QR code to check in when you arrive at the event. This creates an attendance record with a timestamp that is securely captured in a smart contract on the Ethereum blockchain.

There are two primary participant groups in play when it comes to POAP events.

1. Event Planners

The event planners organize events, fundraisers and conferences with POAPs. They can use POAPs to secure digital signatures or validate academic credentials. Meanwhile, POAP NFTs can serve as entrance tickets and prizes for event activities.

Event planners can earn from their activities by charging fees with POAP. They can advertise their events on social media and event management platforms to expand their audience.

2. Event attendees

Each participant will receive a digital badge at each location or event that offers a POAP NFT as a souvenir. Attendees simply need to scan the QR code on the badge using their device or any device provided by the event to view the recorded information. Attendees’ POAPs are updated remotely via location detection or directly on site by scanning the QR code.

Brands and companies that have used the Proof of Attendance Protocol

Several major brands and companies have used the Proof of Attendance Protocol to plan events and engage community members. Here are some brands that have used POAPs.

Estee Lauder

Acclaimed beauty brand Estée Lauder unveiled a one-of-a-kind NFT wearable, Advanced Night Repair, during Metaverse Fashion Week, held March 23-27, 2022.

They handed out 10,000 free Advanced Night Repair NFTs for the event. This allowed users to claim an NFT wearable to give their avatars a unique luminescent look and receive a Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP) badge by virtually entering the Advanced Night Repair “Little Brown Bottle”.

In November 2021, Adidas launched CONFIRMED, an app for drops and exclusive content for POAP (Proof of Attendance Protocol).

Adidas’ POAP serves as a way to recognize its most dedicated supporters – users of the CONFIRMED app – rather than commemorating a particular event.

Lottie London

Lottie London hosted the first metaverse gala at Decentraland to celebrate the festive season and interact with the Gen Z crowd. This event started on May 25, 2022.

Gala attendees were able to fully immerse themselves in the event thanks to the Proof of Attendance Protocol that led users to the Lottie London Walmart store website. Unfortunately, it was only available to the first 2,000 attendees.
